I finally took the plunge to do some renovations around here, most notably something I’ve been thinking about for a while: decoupling my blog from my fullname.com domain. I think for me the main consideration was really wanting some flexibility with this space that I didn’t feel I could get with it tied to my full name, especially with my full name out there linked to a bunch of published writing. I felt some pressure to keep my fullname.com domain a sorta semi-professional neutral identity, and at the same time I wanted a blog to be more freewheeling. Not that this blog isn’t still linked to my name (it very much is), but somehow the separation of spaces feels like a clearer demarcation to me of what they’re about.
Anyway, the hardest thing about getting mint city lights up and running was narrowing down its name. There was a whole melange of elements I wanted to get in there, but website URL shopping these days is painstakingly looking up your desired combination of words to make sure it hasn’t been used already by a punk rock band, an IT company, or a herbal tea shop.
